Fully compatible with Wii remotes, it comes complete with everything you need for blaster action including the sonic micro darts and firing mechanism. 5 Stars Hard to find, but worth it
I don’t understand why this gun (as a separate accessory to the video game) is so hard to find. The video game (Nerf N-Strike Elite for the Wii) was just released in 2009, so you’d think there would be more of these Switch Shot guns available. The video game only comes with one gun. Two guns are not necessary to play the game, you can just use the Wii remote by itself by pointing it and pushing the buttons. But it’s much more fun to play it with these gun controllers, so I wanted two.
I haven’t tried it for shooting darts; the reason I got it was for the video game. It’s identical to the blue gun that comes with the game. The Wii remote fits securely in the gun, and the trigger control works as it should. The red ‘reveal’ lens also does what it’s supposed to: reveal secret codes on the screen in the game. I have no complaints regarding the construction, quality, or function of this gun/controller. It was worth the cost, since it makes the video game twice as much fun when you can team up with someone for two-player blasting (even my 75-year-old father enjoyed it after I convinced him to try it).
The grip is just a hair on the short side. Not a problem for kids, may be for adults. It fits my kids’ hands just fine. For me, I wear large-size gloves, and I don’t have a problem with the grip on this gun. There is enough room to get all my fingers on the grip. It’s a bit snug, but not enough to be uncomfortable. Although I can see this possibly being a problem for adults with meatier fingers than mine.
Another advantage to having two of these guns for the video game: I tried it on two-player, but playing by myself with one gun in each hand. It’s a bit of a challenge keeping track of two reticles (the crosshairs) on the screen at the same time, but it gets easier with a little practice and it’s a lot of fun defending against the robot enemies and blasting away with two pistols at the same time. Call me a big kid, but the video game can be even more fun with two guns than one.
One caveat: There is another Switch Shot gun that is very similar to this one. It’s yellow, not blue like this one. It’s the same design and can be used with the Wii remote for the video game, but it does NOT have the reveal lens. This is not a problem, as long as you keep in mind the person using the blue gun (when playing two-player) with the reveal lens will need to be the person designated to read the secret codes on-screen.
4 Stars Two Toys in One
Having grown up with the original Nintendo Light Gun for the NES and the Power Scope for the SNES I was always slightly disappointed that Nintendo’s subsequent systems the N64 and the Game Cube did not include the capability for a gun periphery (or at the very least one which became popular). However the new Generation of Nintendo system, the Wii with its simple wireless controller, reminiscent of a simplified television remote has inspired several peripherals that seek to recapture that classic Nintendo light gun and arcade shooter feel. All these peripherals work on the same basic principle, the player puts their we remote controller into a plastic frame that simulates, more or less, the feel of a gun. Or to be more accurate, simulates the feel of a game controller shaped like a gun. What sets this particular peripheral apart is that it was created by the makers of the popular Nerf line of toy guns. While at the very least this means they should have some experience creating toy guns but have found a novel means to keep the fun going even if the game system is turned off. The Nerf switch shot blaster can serve as either a toy Nerf gun or can be used to make the remote control for the Nintendo Wii (game controller not included) feel more like a gun for shoot-em up games. The conversion between Nerf gun and Nintendo Wii peripheral is quick and simple. For the most part it feels comfortable in either form of play. (however the handle is on the smaller side as it is marketed primarily for children).
If the gun has any failings it would be the placement of the tactical rail. The Switch-Shot is part of the current generation of Nerf dart guns dubbed the “N-Strike Line”. The line is characterized by certain design elements, most notably the “Tactical Rail” system. These tactical rails allow various accessories such as flashlights, “laser-sights” and even other dart blasters to be attached to the gun. When I saw pictures of the gun my interest was piqued because on the Switch-shot the tactical rail to attach Nerf flashlights or laser sights has been placed under the barrel, as opposed to over the barrel as in most of the other guns. However I was disappointed too find that when the Nerf Laser sight accessory was attached to the gun, it actually becomes more awkward to hold. While this is not the first time the tactical rail system has fallen short of its full potential (i.e. the Maverick), it’s a disappointment that this issue wasn’t caught in the design process.
However overall I rate this fairly high as the idea of a game controller that can be used to play when the system is off, and produced by a well known and trusted toy company was such a good idea I suspect I will be having fun with it for years.

This extra nerf gun is essential for playing against an opponent in the wii nerf game. My sons, 10 and 12, love it!
4 Stars Nerf Wii
The red reveal switch shot is a necessity for the N-Strike Wii video game. This gun can also shoot nerf darts (single load).
