User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars It’s about time!
GH without Van Halen would be like Moon Hero without Neil Armstrong; I was so glad to see this and anxiously anticipated it. I was not disappointed! The classic set list of GHVH is perfect. There is no need to include Sammy, Mr, I can’t drive 55 Hagar in this game. Sammy was always a pathogen in the Van Halen hierarchy and it’s a blessing that he is no where to be found. If you are a true fan of VH, you will love this game, if you are a fan of GH, you will certainly like it as a solid addition. The music is fun and all the classics are there to enjoy. The additional tracks from other artists are a nice addition but the true gold here is the VH tunes and playing along.

This is good stuff!

4 Stars Good but short
My perspective might be colored by the fact that I got this game for free as part of the GH 5 promotion, but I like it! It’s a lot of fun. I don’t miss the Sammy Hagar songs and I liked most of the non-Van Halen songs that are included. So far I’ve enjoyed Guitar Hero: Van Halen a lot more than GH 5.

This game does seem a little short and that’s my biggest complaint. I also would prefer to have the awesome old school dressed Van Halen band in all of the songs, but that’s peripheral to me.

2 Stars Disappointing
I grew up loving Van Halen for all they were, so naturally, I should be ecstatic about a Guitar Hero Van Halen game, but alas, the end result is a big disappointment. Boasting generic looking venues and simply not enough material, Guitar Hero Van Halen features a decent enough helping of David Lee Roth-era tracks to play, as well as some of Eddie Van Halen’s most memorable guitar solo work. That in itself is reason for celebration, but the total package of the game just feels like a rushed cash-in. Though I was never a big fan of the Sammy Hagar era, his time with Van Halen was prolific enough to warrant some consideration. Whether his lack of inclusion was Eddie’s call or Activision is unknown to me (where as thanks to the previous reviewer the absence of Michael Anthony has been cleared up, thank you), he regardless deserved to have at least a few tracks from his time with the band featured here. The extra bonus act tracks however just feel like they were slapped in here just because, and have little to nothing to do with Van Halen or what they meant to generation after generation of rockers and rock fans. Where as the bonus acts on Guitar Hero Metallica made sense, something just doesn’t seem right about having Blink 182 featured as a bonus with Van Halen. All in all, for Guitar Hero junkies and Van Halen fans alike, Guitar Hero Van Halen is worth checking out at the very least, but other than that, there isn’t anything here to hold your interest for long.

3 Stars I Want the Best of Both Worlds…
I’m using my mom’s account to write this review so bare with me.

I got this game for Christmas and loved it. It’s a fun game to play and I was very surprised and pleased to see some Alternative tracks mixed into the game. As many have said before….No Hagar. Luckily, I’m a fan of both era’s of Van Halen and I thought they were both great. I personally think the game would’ve sold amazing had they incorporated songs from both era’s. I just think the creators cheated themselves and I wouldn’t doubt even Eddie has second thoughts about alienating Sammy outta the game. A LOT of good songs came outta the Van Hagar era. Someone needs to tell the folks at “Guitar Hero” it’s Guitar Hero: Van Halen and not Guitar Hero: Van Roth

My Set list would be this.

Ain’t Talkin Bout Love

And the Cradle Will Rock

Beautiful Girls

Everybody Wants Some

Eruption

Hang Em’ High

Hear About it Later

Hot For Teacher

Mean Streets

Ice Cream Man

5 Stars Classic VH
Anyone who likes Classic Diamond Dave era Van Halen will be happy with this release. I’m not a Sammy hater, but admittedly I easily like the Roth albums much more. I would have liked a few Hagar tunes like Finish What Ya Started and some of the 5150 stuff, but given the reunion tour did not include those tunes, I can say that I’m not surprised that the game didn’t either.

I’m also glad that the VH game came out on the Guitar Hero series instead of the Rock Band. I’ve always found that the game play is truer on Guitar Hero where the notes match the actual music much better. The visuals on the Beatles Rock Band can’t be beat, but the music’s match to the notes isn’t always great. I hear Green Day is coming out in 2010 which should please a lot of people, but what I would really love to see would be a Led Zeppelin and/or Jimi Hendrix release on Guitar Hero.
